Millwall came from behind to inflict a rare defeat on leaders Norwich at The Den this afternoon.

Chris Martin’s early free-kick put the visitors in front, but the Lions struck back either side of the break through Tony Craig and Neil Harris to seal victory.

Chris Hackett tested Canaries keeper Fraser Forster with a second minute volley from 25-yards as Millwall began brightly.

However, the hosts were stunned 60 seconds later when, from their first attack, Norwich were awarded a free-kick just outside of the area following a foul by Craig on Martin.

Martin stepped up to take the free-kick and smashed his effort beyond David Forde to put the leaders in front.

Liam Trotter blazed over in the seventh minute after good build up play from the Lions, and Trotter shot straight at Forster a minute later.

Korey Smith set Wesley Hoolahan clear on the right in the 11th minute but his first touch let him down when it came to delivering a cross and the danger was cleared by a relieved Millwall defence.

Forster failed to deal with Hackett’s 19th minute corner, although Scott Barron blazed his shot from the edge of the area over the bar.

Morison put Grabban through minutes and although his initial shot was blocked, he got on the rebound to deliver a low pass across the area which Hackett connected with and fired straight at Forster.

Grabban tested Forster with a powerful shot from 18-yards which forced the visiting keeper to concede a corner.

The initial danger was half cleared by the visitors but Millwall quickly came straight back at them as Barron’s cross landed at the feet of Craig, whose low shot from just inside the box deflected off Michael Nelson and went past Forster.

Martin tried his luck again with another free-kick, this time even further from goal, but Forde was able to deal with the attempt quite comfortably.

Forde produced a fantastic save three minutes before the break to deny Russell Martin, whose clever run took him just inside the area before pulling the trigger.

Harris was introduced at the start of the second half in place of Grabban and the move paid off within minutes six minutes when the striker put the Lions in front.

Barron’s corner was played short to Hackett, who delivered a cross into the danger zone and Harris applied then final touch to make it 2-1.

If Norwich were expecting to make an instant response, it didn’t happen as the hosts clearly had their tails up and dominated the next 10 minutes of play, although admittedly without really coming close to adding a third.

Russell stopped Harris in his tracks on 63 minutes, conceding a free-kick which Hackett swung in and Craig headed over.

Trotter headed tamely off target while in a good position from Alan Dunne’s 66th minute cross and Hackett’s well-struck volley from 18-yards sailed only inches over the bar three minutes later.

Martin’s ambitious attempt from 20 yards went well wide at the other end as Norwich continued to struggle to get themselves back into the contest.

Trotter’s on-target 73rd minute shot took a crucial deflection before landing in the hands of a relieved by Forster.

Zak Whitbread entered the field to a chorus of boos from the home fans as the former Lion came on in place of Hoolahan with 13 minutes left on the clock Barron was forced to put behind Anthony McNamee’s dangerous looking cross for a corner as the Canaries finally began to wake up.

Russell’s deflected 80th minute long range effort forced Forde to get down low to gather, while Hackett squandered a great chance to put an unmarked Harris clear on goal at the other end when he overplayed his pass.

Nelson’s bicycle kick with three minutes remaining was on target and only went wide after taking a crucial deflection.

Four minutes of stoppage time were signalled by the fourth official to set up a tense finale for Kenny Jackett’s battling side.

They need not have worried too much as they eased their way to the winning post and a thoroughly deserved three points.

That’s Leeds and Norwich both beaten on home turf now, so Millwall have proved yet again they can more than compete with the best League One has to offer.
