CHARLTON manager Phil Parkinson believes that the team’s tactical formation remains the right choice despite the Addicks making it three league games without a goal against Oldham.

The line-up, featuring teenage playmaker Jonjo Shelvey up top alongside traditional striker Deon Burton, appears to divide many supporters as to whether it is 4-4-2, 4-5-1 or 4-4-1-1.

But despite the current drought in the final third, Parky shed some light on the team’s approach and defended its effectiveness.

He explained after the game: “Oldham came and made it difficult and it got tight in the midfield where it was man for man, but I still think we played some good stuff and passed the ball well.

“Of course the crowd are going to get frustrated if we don’t score but I thought they were good today and stayed with us and we couldn’t have done much more.

“We class our current formation as 4-4-2, because one of your strikers drops deep when you’re defending and that’s what we do.

“There’s very little difference in the system we play and it hasn’t done too bad for us in twelve games with one defeat so if we can reproduce that over the next twelve games then that would be great.

“We’re all experienced enough to know that along the course of the season there may be changes in the personnel of the team and there might be one or two slight changes in the way we play and we might have to do that, but at the moment we’re second from top and pleased with how we’re going.”
