MATT Spring is convinced Charlton will escape relegation if they can reproduce their battling performance against Crystal Palace between now and the end of the season.

Spring smashed home a 14th minute volley to earn the Addicks a welcome victory over the Eagles to end a winless league run stretching back to October 4.

Charlton may still be bottom of the Championship despite tonight's memorable success, but the new Valley hero is hoping the derby triumph will act as a springboard to beat the drop.

He said: "Everyone is happy, everyone is excited and it is a great feeling to have won but we've got to go to the game at Burnley on Saturday and not throw what we've done tonight away.

"It is going to be a tough game on Saturday and we've just got to look forward to that now.

"That's the standard we've set ourselves. If you get below that, then the manager is going to have something to say.

"If we go below it then it's not good enough for ourselves, for the club or for the fans, so we've just got to keep that standard up.

"I think we should be doing that anyway – every time you set foot on the pitch, that is the aim, that's the goal.

"You've got to set yourself those standards of being at the top and I think we can carry this on."

Spring added: "There are a few new faces about and maybe it will brighten the other lads up a bit to see we are trying to go forward and it isn't all doom and gloom.

"This win might just lift us a little bit closer to where we want to be.

"We need everybody to be pulling in the right direction and we had a meeting in the week where we said there is 18 games to go.

"There are 17 to go now because we've won one and we've got to tick these games off and keep winning.

"It can be done, there are loads of points to play for. If we show what we've done tonight then there is no question we've got enough in the dressing room to get us out of where we are."

Spring also thanked The Valley faithful for producing a memorable atmosphere on a night to remember in SE7.

He said "The crowd got behind us straight away, even when we came out to warm up there was a little bit of a buzz about. In saying that, I think we need that every game.

"I know we dropped off a bit towards the end and the crowd got a bit anxious every time it came back in the box, but if they stick with us and we keep performing I think we can go forward."
