CHARLTON ended their 115-day wait without a league win with victory against bitter rivals Crystal Palace at The Valley.

Matt Spring scored the only goal of the game on 14 minutes to give Phil Parkinson his first Championship victory as Addicks boss and the club their first three points since a 2-1 triumph over Ipswich on October 4.

Tom Soares had the first effort on goal after 10 minutes, but his lame attempt to chip Julian Speroni bounced straight into the arms of the Palace keeper.

Charlton broke the deadlock four minutes later when Palace failed to clear a cross from Lloyd Sam, allowing Valley new boy Matthew Spring to volley past Speroni from eight yards.

The Eagles were slow out of the blocks and didn’t really threaten until the 22nd minute when Nick Carle fired in a cross to the far post which just evaded the out-stretched leg of Paul Ifill.

It was a lacklustre first-half performance from the visitors which was summed up by Carle's ambitious effort sailing into the Palace fans behind Rob Elliot's goal.

However, Charlton nearly surrendered their lead in the dying minutes of the half when Clint Hill failed to make the right contact after he latched onto a cross from John Oster.

Charlton sat-back at the start of the second half and they were nearly punished on the hour, but substitute Victor Moses headed tamely into the arms of Elliot.

But it must be said the Eagles created precious little against a side too scared to attack and attempt to double their advantage, something which must be of concern to Neil Warnock. The game did finally pick up some momentum in the closing stages with a series of half-chances.

Charlton had the first opportunity, but Shaun Derry managed to charge down an effort from Soares on 73 minutes.

Just three minutes later, Deon Burton hit the target with a venomous shot but, fortunately for the Eagles, Speroni didn’t have to move to make the save.

Moses then had an effort for Palace soon after but the angle became too tight and as a result, his low strike provided nothing more than a comfortable save for Elliot.

The Addicks could have put the outcome beyond doubt in injury time, but Chris Dickson's cross agonisingly failed to connect with Burton, who simply had to tap home had he got a touch.
