George Evans was one of the true breakout stars of Bromley's League Two triumph, going from relative obscurity to scoring one of the key goals at the back end of the season to push the Ravens closer to their eventual league title. That trip to Barnet and the goal itself may have secured Evans' place in Bromley folklore for years to come, but a new season brings new challenges.
Since then, the young attacker has continued to make his mark on the now League One side, taking his appearance tally to four and being a recognisable name on the Bromley team sheet, but a 7:0 defeat to Championship side QPR wouldn't have been his preferable end to pre-season. Nonetheless he believes he retains the confidence of manager Andy Woodman ahead of the League One campaign.
When asked about his role going into the upcoming season, Evans responded "It's the same goal as last year, I wanna break into the squad," showing the kind of composure after such a heavy defeat that is a sign of a strong head on young shoulders. Despite the reinforcements that Bromley have made in attack, he "wants to get in the squad, you wanna score goals, you wanna make an impact."
The young forward, who received a call up to train with Wales' Under-19 squad at the end of the season, also commented on the manager Andy Woodman being "good with the young boys" and mentioning how he feels trusted ahead of this season
"The gaffer's good, as you've seen in the last few years he's been good with the young boys, you know he's put a lot of trust in us, we get a lot of good words from him. It's hard for a manager, you've got to fit twenty six boys in, but he does a good job and I feel the trust in him."
The 19 year old will be backing himself to add to his single goal in a Bromley shirt, but despite the higher level of opposition in League One he believes the South London side stand a real chance of causing some trouble against the likes of Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday this season.
"We put the work in, we work everyday, we're in early every morning... so I feel like yes it will be a hard step up but everyone doubted us when we were in League Two as well so we're here to prove everyone wrong again."
Having gone from non-league loans to League Two appearances in the space of a single season, it remains to be seen whether George Evans is ready to make the step up to League One just yet, but at 19 years old the young Welsh attacker believes he is ready. The Bromley academy has already produced some young talents who have gone on to star in the EFL, and Evans will hope he can join Jude Arthurs, Kellen Fisher and Ben Krauhaus in doing just that.
