Arsenal remain on track to retain their Champions League crown after beating London rivals Chelsea 3-1 in the first leg of their quarter-final clash.
It was Chelsea who nearly took an early lead when Alyssa Thompson cut inside after she raced down the right. Her shot, deflected off Laia Codina, hit the inside of the post and bounced out.
The Blues struck the same post just two minutes later when Lauren James beat Lotte Wubben-Moy, but the post handed Arsenal another reprieve.
Despite Chelsea's chances, Arsenal struck first when a superb free kick from Katie McCabe was headed downwards and into the bottom left corner by Stina Blackstenius in the 21st minute. It was her first Champions League goal since bagging the winner in the final last season.
Arsenal were in the ascendancy and doubled their lead on the half-hour mark. Beth Mead found Chloe Kelly, who unleashed a powerful strike into the bottom right corner.
Chelsea thought they had found a lifeline when Arsenal goalkeeper Anneke Borbe failed to claim Sandy Baltimore's free-kick, allowing Veerle Buurman to head into the gaping net. Yet, it was disallowed for a perceived foul on Laia Codina, a decision supported by VAR.
Blues boss Sonia Bompastor was aggrieved, and rightfully so. Codina had bought the foul at the back post as Buurman headed in. There was nowhere near enough contact to chalk the goal off.
Chelsea continued to push and were rewarded in the 66th minute when a corner, cleared outside of the area, fell to James, who nonchalantly guided an outrageous 30-yard strike with her left foot into the top corner.
It was classy from James, but somehow the best goal of the night was overshadowed when Alessia Russo became a record-breaker, adding Arsenal's third, her eighth in the competition this season, the most scored by an English player in a single Champions League campaign.
Blackstenius, after receiving possession from McCabe and driving forward, found Russo free on the edge of the area, with the England international setting herself before drilling into the bottom corner. Chelsea were left with a challenging mountain to climb ahead of next week's second leg.
Arsenal's 10th consecutive win in all competitions was vital, taking a giant step towards back-to-back Champions League semi-finals after recovering their two-goal lead.
For Chelsea, there remains reason for optimism – they have been here before. In last season's quarter-finals, Bompastor's side overturned a two-goal deficit in the second leg at home to Manchester City. Chelsea will hope they can channel that spirit at Stamford Bridge next week.
