This weekend on Saturday 20th April, the Junior Interregional Rowing Regatta (JIRR) took place. This is one of the first major regattas of this year's regatta season, and welcomed rowers aged 14-16 from across Great Britain to race the Holme Pierrepont course at Nottingham.

Here rowers represent one of 13 regions from across Great Britain, each having a different colour to represent themselves. This year is the first year where Scotland is invited to JIRR, giving Scottish rowers a chance to race others across the rest of Great Britain, from Wales and England.

This was not the only change to the competition, as it now has a time trial heat instead of a side-by-side regatta style heat. As well as this, in single events, two rowers are allowed to represent each region instead of just one. This allows for more competition and gives more rowers a chance to come to JIRR and gain racing experience.

The day did not just consist of rowing, however. The atmosphere for the day was thrilling, with people nationwide coming together to compete, all of whom enjoy rowing and get to experience the day together. Families and friends also got the chance to come and support, with cheers for rowers, clubs and regions echoing across the course, making the day even more special. The feeling of hearing your friends cheer your name as you cross the finish line is something unmatched.

Rowers from Mossbourne Rowing Academy representing the Thames Southeast region tell us why JIRR to a valuable experience.

“All of the clubs are together, so you feel a real sense of community and it was worth the three-hour drive to get here”.

Overall, the day was a big success and hopefully the competition will continue to grow each year!
