Home woes continued for Welling United as Taunton Town became the latest club to claim all three points at Park View Road.

Warren Feeney’s team may look at key decisions and incidents that went against them, but overall they did not create enough to deserve much out of the game. Taunton played with three at the back and flooded the midfield with Mat Jarvis foraging up front.

Myles Roberts returned in goal for Welling from injury and, with Kai McKenzie-Lyle away on duty, Fraser Barnsley has joined the Wings as cover on a short term loan deal from Oxford United. Roberts was soon in action, claiming a Jay Foulston flicked header from a Lloyd James free kick.

Stefan Payne and Ade Azeez both had shots blocked after Sadik Balarabe had done well to get a cross in before Roberts was again called into diving to save from Ollie Chamberlain, and then recovering quickly to smother as Jarvis closed in. The Welling custodian then made another regulation save when a shot from Cameron Evans took a slight deflection.

In a rare Welling attack, Chi Ezennolim picked out Kodi Lyons-Foster with a corner but the centre-back’s header was saved comfortably.

James had the last two efforts in the first half, both long range efforts that went wide.

After the break, Roberts made another straight forward save from a shot by Zac Smith from distance before Welling came close when Aaron Barnes headed wide from Rob Howard’s cross. Christie Pattisson then tricked his way into a shooting position that Jack Bycroft blocked with his legs, but when it came back in, Barnes could not keep his header down and it flew over.

Smith had a great chance to break the deadlock when Joe Guest crossed to him but Roberts was equal to his effort with a good save, then came the big decision that went against the Wings. Azeez broke through and pushed it past Bycroft only for the Taunton goalkeeper to body-check Welling’s leading scorer to deny him the opportunity to roll it into the empty net. It was clearly a goal scoring opportunity so it came as some surprise that the referee only brandished a yellow card. The Peacocks had another goalkeeper on the bench, and had not used all their substitutes, however they should have been reduced to ten men. Bycroft took full advantage of his escape moments later when making an excellent save from George Alexander’s well struck volley.

Guest brought another straight-forward save out of Roberts before the visitors went ahead with eight minutes remaining. Welling gave away possession in a dangerous positions and a quick pass forward allowed Jarvis to get the wrong side of Jamie Sendles-White. The Welling defender leaned in and the referee deemed it to be greater than a shoulder to shoulder challenge and awarded a penalty. Smith stepped up, and although Roberts did everything in his power to keep his clean sheet with a diving save, it came back out to Smith who made no mistake with the follow-up.

There was no quick response and Taunton were untroubled for the remaining minutes and might have scored again when Ross Stearn’s snap-shot clipped the outside of the near post.

When the final whistle sounded, boos engulfed the ground as the Welling faithful’s patience is starting to run out.
