In a match between two teams with lofty ambitions, Woking came out on top with a big win at Bromley.

Michael Cheek had the first goal attempt for the hosts when getting in behind from Chris Bush’s through ball, but he prodded his effort wide of the near post. Cheek and Ethan Coleman then combined to create a chance for Harry Forster, but he blasted over from a wide angle.

At the other end. Josh Casey shot wide from distance before Rohan Ince sent Padraig Amond clear down the right-hand side and his rasping drive clattered the bar on its way over. Ince was involved again in Woking’s next move when playing it in to Jermaine Anderson who controlled it with his back to goal before turning and firing wide.

James Vennings created a chance for Bromley when he squared it, Coleman dummied, and Billy Bingham came in late but snatched at his chance and it flew over.

As the first half came to a close both goalkeepers were called into making their first saves. Tom Smith made a stunning point-blank one-handed stop to keep out Amond’s header that was going back across him before Woking’s custodian, Craig Ross, had a more comfortable one as Coleman’s shot was deflected to take the sting out of it.

Immediately after the half time break Ricky Korboa got in behind the Bromley defence but Omar Sowunmi got back to make a brilliant block. Korboa injured himself in the process and was replaced by Reece Grego-Cox.

Two minutes before the hour mark, Woking went ahead. Amond did superbly to chase a lost cause and win a corner. Josh Casey delivered deep, it was headed back across goal, and Grego-Cox was in the right place to poke it home.

Scott Cuthbert headed over from another Casey corner before Ross made an excellent save from Cheek’s downward header. Bush launched a long throw and Sowunmi met it with a diving header, but it rippled on the roof of the net.

Ross was then called into making a double save as Bromley searched for an equaliser. First, he got down well to save Cheek’s shot towards the bottom corner and Adam Marriott looked certain to score from the follow up, but the Woking goalkeeper recovered quickly to make a brilliant block. Sowunmi then headed wide from the corner. That proved to be decisive.

The hosts’ search for an equaliser meant that they were prone to the counter, and they got caught with twelve minutes remaining when a long clearance found Grego-Cox in a two on one and he squared unselfishly to give fellow substitute Rhys Browne a tap in.

That was sufficient for the Cardinals as they saw out the remaining time in relative comfort.

Andy Woodman’s Bromley have not won at home since September but have a chance to put that right when they host F.C. Halifax Town on Saturday.
