EX-Palace midfielder Conor Gallagher missed a penalty for Chelsea in their pre-season defeat to Charlotte.

The Blues were taken to penalties by the MLS side after Daniel Rios scored a late penalty to cancel out Christian Pulisic's first-half goal for the Blues.

The game went into a penalty shootout and Gallagher, who starred for Palace last season on loan, stood up to take one.

The Englishman, however, did not cover himself in glory, and he tried to panenka the goalkeeper. Instead, Gallagher scuffed his effort and the goalkeeper easily collected the ball.

The penalty proved costly as the Blues went on to lose the shootout 5-3.

Football fans have been quick to criticise the midfielder with some labelling the penalty as "the worst in history".

Palace had been trying to re-sign the midfielder this summer due to his success last season. Gallagher scored eight goals and set up three more in 34 Premier League appearances.

However, recently manager Patrick Vieira admitted that there was "no chance" the club would be able to complete a deal for Gallagher and have instead pursued over targets.
