There was more disappointment for Welling United on Saturday when they were held at home by Bath City.

Sadly, that meant that the Welling United board felt that they couldn’t continue in the same vein and manager Peter Taylor’s reign as Welling manager was ended.

Neither side were particularly enterprising in a tight first half and chances were few and far between. David Sims-Burgess headed over for Bath. Ben Allen, for Welling and Ryan Jones for the visitors, had half chances before the deadlock was broken after twenty-five minutes. A disputed free kick was awarded to Bath and Elliott Frear delivered for Cody Cooke to rise highest and head home.

Less than a minute later, Welling might have levelled when Allen was sent clear, but his shot beat goalkeeper Ryan Clarke and the post.

Both clubs continued to cancel each other out until early in the second half when Jordan Dyer headed wide from a Jones corner.

Dipo Akinyemi tried to create something for Welling when getting to the bye-line and cutting in, but Clarke got down well to block it out for a corner. Akinyemi then missed a great chance to equalise when meeting Kristian Campbell’s inviting cross with a header that he put wide from close range.

Substitute Brad Stevenson was off target with a long range shot and Jones had a half chance at the other.

Cooke missed a great chance to finish the game as a contest with ten minutes remaining, but he slid his shot beyond the far post and Bath were made to pay for it one minute later. Throughout the second half, Bath had players down holding their face causing the referee to stop play, but when they did it once more, the referee waved play on. Allen burst into the space left by the prone Jack Batten before slotting it under Clarke and into the net.

Although the last nine minutes, plus six additional, were frantic end to end football, neither side created a further chance and the game finished with the spoils shared.
