It was another disappointing afternoon on the road for Welling United as they were beaten at Oxford City.

On a miserable afternoon of constant rain, and in Peter Taylor’s first game in charge, the Wings went behind early once again. Elliott Benyon laid a cross into the path of Joe Iaciofano and he finished clinically.

Ben Dudzinski made a comfortable save from Che Krabbendam as Welling looked for a reply before Benyon’s downward header bounced up and hit the bar on its way over.

Krabbendam found debutant Daniel Carr but his shot was blocked then Kristian Campbell fired a free kick wide. Krabbendam fired over before Smith had to to be down sharply to save from Iaciofano.

Welling had the last chance of the half when Ben Dudzinski made a good save from Krabbendam.

After the interval, Dan Matsuzaka failed to find the target but it didn’t go out and Reece Fleet’s curler was saved brilliantly by Welling goalkeeper Tom Smith. Sadly, that turned out to be the last save for Smith as when the corner came over, he fell awkwardly and dislocated his shoulder. While he was down, Owusu shot but Campbell headed over at the cost of another corner. With no goalkeeper on the bench, Campbell took the gloves and was in action immediately when claiming Ashby’s corner.

He then made a good save from Ashby before Benyon and Harry Kypriano both missed the target with headers.

Eventually, Oxford scored the crucial second when Campbell was unable to hold onto an Ashby corner and Benyon prodded it home.

Ade Shokunbi’s powerful drive was saved brilliantly by Dudzinski before Harvey Bradbury made it three with a glancing header with five regulation minutes remaining.

Nine minutes were added, mostly as a result of Smith’s long injury break and Campbell made a good near post save from Jacob Bancroft.

Dylan Pepe whistled a thirty yarder just wide but Bardbury had the final effort with a shot that went wide.

Taylor will now have to try and lift his side ahead of next Saturday’s trip to Chippenham Town.
