Welling United continued their recent upsurge in form and were left disappointed that they only claimed a point against Billericay Town.

Other than the first fifteen minutes, and the final fifteen minutes, Welling dominated but had to settle for a draw when they concede a late penalty.

Lyle Della-Verde had the first half chance but delayed his shot and it was blocked then Matt Everitt on debut drew an excellent save out of Dion-Curtis Henry.

Despite their positive start the Wings went behind when Kyel Reid waltzed through the Welling defence and fired into the bottom corner,

Anthony Cook had a strong shout for a penalty turned down before Nathan Green’s header hit the underside of the bar and came out. Della-Verde had a deflected shot tipped over then a Cook volley fizzed past the post as Welling continued to search for an equaliser.

On the break, Billericay had a chance and Reise Charles-Cook made a double save to thwart Luke Wanadio and Josh Hutchinson.

Shortly afterwards, Welling had another shout for a penalty when Billy Knott’s tackle from behind brought down Cook and this time the referee did point to the spot. Cook took it himself and sent Henry the wrong way.

Everitt went on a good run and tried to slip Rowan Liburd through but he was unable to get a shot away then Cook got on the end of a half cleared corner but his shot went wide.

Three minutes after the break, Welling took a deserved lead when Liburd headed home from close range after Lewis Hobbs had nodded Della-Verde’s free kick across the face of goal.

Henry saved from Everitt and then the Brighton loanee shot over after good work by Della-Verde and Ryan Blackman.

Della-Verde saw a shot deflected just the wrong side of the post then Cook shot wide after a good run before Billericay finished strongly.

Robinson was sent clear but shot beyond the far post and Hutchinson volleyed wide for the Blues before they were awarded a penalty when Robinson went down. This time he made no mistake when he took it himself, giving Charles-Cook no chance.

It was tough on the Wings who deserved al three points but it was an excellent performance that bodes well for the future.
