Goals by Adam Coombes and Anthony Cook helped Welling United return to winning ways with a well deserved victory over Billericay Town.

Only a string of saves by Billericay goalkeeper Alan Julian stopped Welling from recording a far more convincing score-line.

Brad Quinton rang the changes from the team that lost at Maidstone United, partly caused by illness and also through squad rotation.

Julian was called into action early on saving on the dive from Philip Roberts before the outstanding Diaz Wright created a chance for himself but his fierce drive was beaten out by Julian. Coombes was first to the rebound and he played in Dipo Akinyemi whose shot was deflected over.

From a half cleared free kick Roberts burst through but once again Julian saved well before the Billericay custodian was again in business when turning Cook’s shot round the post.

Cook again came close when his low cross was deflected on to the outside of the far post and out for another corner.

The next save by Julian was less comfortable when Coombes long low shot caused him problems but he managed to bundle it round the post for yet another Welling corner.

Jack Paxman’s free kick for Billericay from out wide was the best that the visitors could offer but Dan Wilks claimed it well before Akinyemi sent Roberts through but he was unable to lift it over the outcoming Julian.

Akinyemi was next to come close. Cook sent in a deep cross and Rob Swaine got up well to send back across goal for Akinyemi to meet but his header flew back out off the post.

Connor Shields had a shot for Billericay just before the break but his shot was so wild that it didn’t even go out of play.

After the interval, Julian continued where he left off. Akinyemi was sent through at the end of another good move but Julian stuck out a left boot to save.

Just short of the hour mark, Welling finally broke the dead-lock. Cook crossed and clever Coombes movement allowed him to shake off his marker and rise unchallenged to send his header back inside the post.

Coombes came close again soon after but Ben Nunn cleared his header off the line before Gavin McCallum shot wide for the Wings.

On-loan striker Joe Quigley had a header saved comfortably by Wilks before the Blues had their one clear cut chance. Jake Robinson was sent clear but Wilks was out quickly and the Billericay substitute could only slide it wide of the far post.

As the game moved into the final ten minutes, Julian made another excellent save from Chiori Johnson. However, Welling scored the goal that made the game safe soon after. Bradley Goldberg burst into the penalty area and as he shaped to shoot, Michael Chambers brought him down. Cook stepped up and although Julian went the right way, the penalty had the power and accuracy to beat him.

Swaine almost made it three but Julian made another excellent save before he made a more straight-forward one from Korrey Henry deep into injury time.

Shields had the final shot of the match for Billericay but it was deflected over.
