Lee Bowyer admitted he takes “full responsibility” for Charlton’s heavy 4-0 defeat away to Huddersfield Town.

The Addicks’ survival hopes were dealt a crushing blow as their relegation rivals put four goals past them – including a brace from former player Karlan Grant.

With two points separating them and the drop, the defeat is a major setback as 22nd-placed Middlesbrough take on Nottingham Forest on Monday night.

He said: “The first half was bad, poor. I take full responsibility for it.

“I picked the team, I picked players I thought would do better, playing a diamond, and it didn't work. [We were] too soft, too passive.

“In the second half I thought, once we changed it, then we were better. We created and got into some really good areas but that quality in the end just wasn't there. We should have at least scored to level up before they got the second.

“Disappointing for the second one, handball [on Steve Mounie], and then that just knocks the stuffing out of us really, I think. Just not good enough.”

The Charlton boss also said, had his team scored, they could have gone on to win the game, having created up to six “great” chances.

He added: “I said to the players after the game that I picked people who I thought would do better, and they didn't, and those players let me down.

“I've learnt that we're in this fight and I'm going to need men to stand there and fight for us.”
