Karlan Grant grabbed a brace against his former club as Huddersfield Town thrashed Charlton to inflict a major blow to their hopes of Championship survival.

The former Addicks striker scored either side of substitute Steve Mounie before Juninho Bacuna hit a stunner to complete the rout at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Charlton remain two points above the relegation zone but must now hope that Middlesbrough, who are 22nd, don't secure victory at home to Nottingham Forest on Monday.

Lee Bowyer made three changes to the side which suffered last-minute heartbreak away to Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the week.

Aiden McGeady made just his second start since joining in January, while George Lapslie and Aston Villa loanee Andre Green also came in. Jonny Williams was named as a substitute.

Huddersfield began the game in earnest by asking questions of Charlton early, and they drew first blood after 25 minutes.

Lapslie passed the ball back to Deji Oshilaja, only for Grant to pick the defender off inside the Charlton box before drilling it home.

The visitors were left frustrated by the defensive error as they had started to put together a decent spell following concerted pressure from Huddersfield.

McGeady and Erhun Oztumer both registered efforts either side of the opening strike but Huddersfield threatened to add to their lead.

After Arsenal loanee Chris Willock sliced wide of the target, Emile Smith-Rowe drew a smart save out of Dillon Phillips before Grant smashed the post from a tight angle on the rebound.

And he went close again to grabbing his brace after Danny Simpson’s inviting right-wing cross found him unmarked in the penalty area, only to glance wide of goal.

Bowyer changed things up at the half-time break by bringing on Williams in place of Oztumer as Charlton searched for an important equaliser.

They went close to finding it not long into the restart, but Danny Simpson produced a vital last-ditch block to deny Adam Matthews from close in.

The Addicks had begun to build momentum at this point, with Bowyer having introduced Macauley Bonne for McGeady, and were made to rue another missed opportunity.

Oshilaja broke free down the right side and into the Huddersfield box before seeing his cutback fired over the bar by Josh Cullen.

But Charlton’s hopes of mounting a comeback were dashed when substitute Mounie bundled the ball home from Toffolo’s cross, two minutes after coming on for Fraizer Campbell.

The Addicks’ players protested with referee Geoff Eltringham, saying Mounie touched the ball with his arm before it went in, but the goal still stood.

Huddersfield were not done though, continuing to apply pressure in the late stages, as Lewis O’Brien and fellow substitute Juninho Bacuna both went close.

They managed to add a third in added time when Bacuna slipped Grant through for a close-range finish, gifting him his second of the game and 16th of the season.

Bacuna made it four when he rifled one in from long-range beyond the outstretched hands of Phillips.
