Welling United’s three game winning run was ended by a home defeat against a well organised Slough Town team.

Brad Quinton made three changes to the Welling line up that had won at St. Albans a week earlier. Nathan Green returned from injury to replace the suspended Connor Dymond, Che Krabbendam came in for a league debut and Phil Roberts started. Aaron Cosgrave and Brad Goldberg dropped out.

Green was called into immediate action when clearing off the line from Dan Roberts before Welling looked lively at the other end. Cameron James caught Josh Jackman out at the far post when meeting Anthony Cook’s deep free kick then Cook’s first touch took him in behind the Slough defence but his second touch was just too heavy and Jack Turner was out quickly to claim.

Sam Togwell was then relieved to see his header fly just wide of his own goal from a dangerous Cook delivery then Cook did well to find Dipo Akinyemi and he got a shot beyond Turner but it slid just wide of the far post.

Slightly against the run of play, Slough went ahead. Matthew Lench delivered a corner that was knocked on by Ben Harris and then Lee Togwell for Roberts to head home from close range.

Dan Wilks then did well to stop them doubling their lead when getting down quickly and making a good save from a reverse shot by Ben Harris before Welling levelled. James shot across goal and Jack Turner appeared to have it covered but it found its way just inside the far post.

Ben Harris almost put the Rebels back ahead almost immediately but his curler came back off the crossbar.

After the break, Lench fired over from fifteen yards before Turner made an easy save from Cook. Diaz Wright’s half blocked shot fell just out of reach of Akinyemi before Slough enjoyed a strong period of the game.

George Wells had a long shot turned over by Wilks and then headed wide when getting on the end of Lench’s corner. Lee Togwell had a shirt pushed around the post by Wilks then Sam Togwell headed another Lench corner over.

It looked like Welling had seen out that spell but Harold Joseph raised an arm in his own penalty area and handled a ball over the top at the cost of a penalty. Roberts stepped up and gave Wilks no chance from the spot.

Chiori Johnson shot wide for Welling before Slough substitute Louie Soares fired well over at the other end.

One last chance to save a point was offered to Welling in the closing minutes but Turner was equal to Cook’s thirty five yard free kick when turning it over.
