Millwall have held talks with Wycombe Wanderers over hiring Gareth Ainsworth for the managerial role at The Den according to reports.
The Lions have been looking for Neil Harris’s successor since he stepped down from the post 12-days ago.
Sky Sports reported that Millwall chiefs approached Wycombe boss Ainsworth over the weekend and enquired about a potential compensation package for the 46-year-old.
Ainsworth is thought to be Millwall’s preferred choice but Gary Rowett and Tim Cahill are both names in the frame for the vacancy.
Former QPR, Wimbledon, Preston and Wycombe man Ainsworth’s stock is high after guiding Wanderers to second in League One.
Sunderland are also thought to be interested in his services as they look for Jack Ross’s replacement after his sacking a fortnight ago.
Adam Barrett lead Millwall in their 2-1 win over Leeds United before the international break and will take charge for the London derby at Brentford on Saturday.

Millwall fans were split in their opinion over hiring Ainsworth.
Ainsworth wont get #Millwall fans, unfortunately I think his appointment would be a backwards step for the club

There's surely absolutely no chance Ainsworth is going to Millwall.. I was more concerned about the Lincoln rumours #Millwall

So back to Millwall..... personally i wouldn't have Ainsworth as #Millwall manager. Points being: 1) inexperienced at championship level 2) has not pulled up many trees at Wycombe 3) NOT a level up from harris 4) Why has no other teams previous approached him? 5) What links......

We might see Fred back in a #Millwall shirt if Ainsworth gets the job.

The worrying thing about a potential Gareth Ainsworth appointment is that ex-QPR players tend not to have had much success at managing #Millwall in recent years.
