Charlton have yet to see the best of Tom Lockyer according to the defender.

Sitting eighth in the Championship despite back-to-back defeats the Addicks have had an impressive start to the season, and an unsung hero of their fine start is Lockyer.

Arriving from Bristol Rovers on a free transfer the defender has played every minute of the campaign so far, but feels there’s more to come.

“I’ve done alright,” a modest Lockyer said.

“I’ve been struggling since the start of the season with my knee.

“I hope I’ve seen the back of that now and kick on a bit more, touch wood.”

A mainstay of Lee Bowyers defensive unit, the 24-year-old has slotted in seamlessly alongside captain Jason Pearce at the heart of the defence.

“It’s good to get a partnership and understanding when you’re in the back to build block for the rest of team to work from.

“If you’ve got a week defence, your midfield don’t have a base where they can express themselves like they want to.

“It’s important to get an understanding.”

The defender is getting carried away with the positive start they’ve achieved in Se7, and with a visit of table toppers Leeds United on Saturday he’s all too aware of the task they face this season.

“Well, it’s only a good start, it’s a long old season, people say it’s the toughest league around,” he added.

“Lots of games, there’ll be injuries, bigger teams will go again in the January window.

“There’s loads of factors to consider, but we’ve given ourselves a good start.

“We’ve got a difficult run now, we’ll take it as it comes, and not get ahead of ourselves.”
