Charlton simply weren’t good enough in their 2-0 defeat at Wigan said midfielder Darren Pratley.

Chey Dunkley strikes either side of the break gave the Latics a deserved three points at the DW Stadium in a game where Charlton despite their poor showing had chances.

The matchday captain held no punches following his side’s second successive league defeat, dropping them to seventh in the Championship.

“We let ourselves down last week, and this week again,” Pratley said.

“We were very disappointing today, especially after the run we’ve been on.

“All in all we were sloppy, giving the ball away cheaply, losing individual battles.

“If I’m honest, they were better than us today.

“However bad we were, we had our chances.

“There was a few good saves, a penalty shout, and we could’ve got something out of the game, but we aren’t going to kid ourselves though, we weren’t good today.”

As poor as Pratley felt the Addicks performed, the former Bolton and Swansea man knows they can’t dwell on defeat with a trip to Leeds at The Valley next weekend.

“We’ve had a great start to the season,” he continued.

“We haven’t hit our peak yet, and we can do better.

“We are learning and some of us haven’t played in this division.

“The majority of teams can win a few and lose a few in this league, it’s a question of keeping moral up and going again.

“You don’t drink champagne and celebrate when you win, and when you lose you don’t go home to cry.

“We don’t go out and big ourselves up, we win together, lose together.

“We’ve lost two now and there’s not too many times that’s happened since I’ve been here.

“Obviously it’s going to hurt, it’s a long trip for the fans, and it’s not nice to drive or sit on the train for three or for hours to see their team lose 2-0.

“But we’ll dust ourselves down, watch the video, see what we can learn and stick together.

“There’s another side to football as well, the side when things aren’t going so good, and that’s the side of footy you see a different side to people.

“That’s when we stick together, and that’s the best thing about this group.

“The league can be unforgiving sometimes and you can go on a bad run, but hopefully we can make that right next week.”
