Lee Bowyer believes Karlan Grant does not regret leaving Charlton for Huddersfield despite their respective league positions.

Grant left The Valley in League One to play Premiership football in January, but nine months later he finds his Terriers side one from bottom in the Championship while his former employers ride high in second.

On a personal level the 21-year-old has started the season well, scoring four in six games, five of which ending in defeat however.

The forward was a rare positive for Huddersfield last season too, scoring four times in the top flight although they were ultimately unable to avoid relegation.

Bowyer however doesn’t believe the forward regrets his transfer to the John Smith Stadium despite the 21 places separating the sides this term.

“I don’t think it’s fair to say he regrets his move because he went to play in the Premier League,” Bowyer said of the Charlton Academy product.

“He’s scored goals in the Premier League and as a kid that’s what you want to do, to play at the highest level you possibly can.

“Karlan had an opportunity to play Premier League football, he made it clear he wanted to do that, and we had to let him go.

“Nothing we could do about that.

“Ok, he’s at a place now and they’re not doing so well, but it was his choice, and if you ask him personally if you think he made the wrong choice, he’d probably say no.”

Grant netted 14 goals for Charlton last season which earned him his £1.5million to the then Premier League outfit.

Current top scorer Lyle Taylor was subject to failed bids on transfer deadline day from Brentford, and asked whether Bowyer fears he could lose any of his current stars in the next transfer window should they continue to shine and surprise everybody in the Championship, the manager remained philosophical.

“We want to keep all our players, we are building something good here but unfortunately we aren’t in full control of what will happen.

“It’s always going to happen, (teams coming in for players).

“Brentford tried to come and get Lyle (Taylor) in the summer, it happens.

“Someone took Karlan last January, that’s what happens, when you improve players that’ll always happen.

“I believe every club is a selling club, not just ours, Manchester United just bought Harry Maguire from Leicester, and Leicester have got bundles of money but it didn’t stop them.

“It’s not just our club, if you do well, you’re out there to be rewarded and move on, that’s the game whether we like it or not.

“That’s the game, it’ll always be the case.”
