Charlton’s performance in their 1-0 win over Brentford proves the Addicks are up for the Championship fight this season according to midfielder Jonny Williams.

Lee Bowyer’s men maintained their unbeaten start to the season as Conor Gallagher’s first half goal was enough to seal three points against a side many have labelled as dark horses for promotion.

Williams, who got his fourth assist of the season in the victory, believes the manner in which they ground out the result against a side who had 70% possession at The Valley showcased a dogged side to their game many wouldn’t have expected.

“Our main aim is to play attractive football, but coming up against a team that want to do that as well it was always going to be tough,” the Welsh international said.

“We knew they’d have a lot of the ball, but some of the blocks and performances at the back were phenomenal and some of the best I’ve seen.

"Jason Pearce in particular, I thought was incredible.

“You see Lyle (Taylor) tracking back week in week out, Tomer (Hemed), he’s not been here long and already you see him tracking back in the left back position.

“It’s things like that that get you over the line.

“They’re the differences, the fine margins.”

Operating with one of the lowest budget’s in the division, Charlton were the bookies favourite for the drop this season.

But with 11 points from a possible 15, Bowyer’s side sit third in the table and at present, relegation is the last thing on fans and player’s minds.

“So far, so good and long may it continue,” Williams continued.

“It’s early, but we can only play what’s put in front of us.

“We’ve got a tough run of games coming up, so it’s nice to be surprising a few teams on the way for sure.

“We’ve got a very good squad, a quality squad and definitely enough to compete in this division, compared to teams I’ve played in.

“But there’s a long way to go, with one game before international break, so we’re looking to win that.”

Williams, who spent six months at the club at the back end of last season before committing to 12-month with the Addicks this summer, believes a lot of the feel-good factor around SE7 is down to the manager and his recruitment staff.

“It’s massive what the manager’s created.

“The job they’ve done, bringing in the players to fit into the system and buy into what we are doing.

“Everyone wears their heart on their sleeve and gives more than 100% for the manager.

“It’s credit to him for bringing in the right players and it’s a joy to play with them and it’s bringing the best out of me as well.”

Charlton travel to Reading on Saturday.
