Roy Hodgson said there’s no “magic wand” to change Crystal Palace’s scoring problems as they slumped to their first defeat of the season against Sheffield United.

John Lundstram’s strike proved decisive as the Blades won their first game at Bramall Lane in the Premier League since ending a 12-year absence.

Despite Palace’s impressive scoring record away from home, with only Manchester City having found the net more times in 2019, they haven’t scored in their opening two Premier League games.

Hodgson, who bemoaned his side’s second-half performance at Bramall Lane, said: “[To score more goals] you do the same as you've always done and that's to keep working at your game.

“Keep making certain that the movements are right and [that] we're attacking the right areas.

“That you're constantly giving people a chance to practice their movements, to practice the quality of their passing and their crosses, because there is no magic wand which changes those things. We've played two matches now, 180 minutes, and we haven't scored a goal and we've conceded one.

“We know that you can't win matches by playing 0-0, you've got to score goals to win matches.

“But I believe there are players in the team who are capable of scoring goals and we just have to make certain that we keep working, keep faith with them and they themselves will have to keep faith in themselves.

“Unfortunately, as a coach, all you can do is show your faith in a player, to give him [the] support and backing that you think he might need.

“But it's always the player's job to get out on the field and perform and give the sort of performance that is going to get him the praise that he hopes he deserves.”

Palace’s scoring chances were few and far between. An early Christian Benteke chance proving to be one of their best all game.

Although former England boss Hodgson was content with the first-half showing he was less pleased with the second 45 minutes.

He added: “They did what they needed to do. They gave the sort of performance that [Sheffield United boss] Chris Wilder was wanting to see from them, so he'll be very happy with his team's performance.

“It's got him three very important points.

“I can't be happy with the Crystal Palace performance because we didn't do anywhere near enough in the game – especially in the second-half – to get ourselves back in it and to cause them the sort of problems we would need to cause them if we were going to get something from the game.”
