Lee Bowyer still remains uncertain over whether Jonny Williams will return to Charlton following his release from the club last month.

The former Crystal Palace midfielder, who featured in the Addicks’ promotion-winning campaign last season, has been training with the club since his short-term contract expired in June.

Both parties are still receptive towards the idea of him signing a new contract, however, there are still some obstacles to overcome.

It comes following a video Lyle Taylor published on Instagram which fuelled speculation over whether the Wales international was coming back.

But Bowyer says there are no significant updates on the situation.

He said: “I’m not on Instagram or anything like that so I wasn’t even aware of that until you just said it!

“No, I don’t know. [With] Jonny it is what it is. We know the situation regarding Jonny – yes we would like to have him but it’s a situation that’s tough.

“Obviously the wage he was on at Palace was big, we don’t have that [money] so we have to be patient with Jonny.”

Asked whether Williams will continue to train with the club, he added: “Yeah, it’s going to be difficult next week.

“I spoke to him yesterday about it, because we play on Tuesday and Wednesday [against Ebbsfleet and Dagenham & Redbridge], so he might have a few days off.

“I think he played quite a bit through the summer as well with Wales, so he had a shorter break than everybody anyway.

“He said, ‘Do you mind if I have a few days off?’ and I said, ‘Look Jonny, you’re not our player, so if you want to have a week off that’s your choice!’

“He’s a lovely lad and really respectful but for Tuesday and Wednesday he won’t be here for sure.”
