Millwall’s new signing Matt Smith says he is ‘ready to hit the ground running.’
Long-admired by the Lions, the 30-year-old forward made the journey across London from Queens Park Rangers on what’s thought to be a two-year deal.
At 6’6” he’s seen as a replacement for Steve Morison who departed for Shrewsbury on loan, whilst Tom Elliott has not gained the confidence of Neil Harris at Championship level.
Smith, with 21 goals in his 18-months at Loftus Road may not be the prolific goalscorer Lee Gregory was, but his stats over that period are a little skewed considering he only started 11 games last season.
The former Oldham, Fulham and Leeds target man spoke of his delight at joining up with his new teammates and believes he’s already stolen a march in his attempt to be match-fit for the season opener against Preston at The Den.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be here now and I’m ready to hit the ground running,” he told Millwall official.
“Being honest, it can be a little unsettling for a player when discussions are ongoing, but I’ve just tried to be as professional as possible and I had a week of training at QPR to get my fitness going.
“That was beneficial for me, and now I’m heading into week two of pre-season with Millwall and it’s fantastic.”

What most fans have observed however is how seemingly he will slip in to Millwall’s ‘style-of-play.’ An opinion Smith seemed to echo in his unveiling.
“From a footballing perspective, for me to be here seems like a really good fit, and all the tools are here for me to flourish,” he added.
“I’ll be taking the opportunity with both hands and will give my all for the side. I always play with my heart on my sleeve and give everything, and I think I have very obvious strengths and limitations.
“Being here I believe will really suit me, and hopefully I will score goals, contribute and really impact the side. I can’t wait to get stuck in on the training ground – roll on August 3rd for when the season starts.”
The Lions faithful, although delighted with the arrival on the whole, all pointed to one area where they think Harris’s side could be a real threat next season.
There were those however who weren't so convinced:
