Charlton secured home advantage for the second leg of the playoff semi-finals by thrashing Rochdale in their final game of the League One regular season.

Lyle Taylor scored a goal and assisted another, as the Addicks went three goals up by half time, before Krystian Bielik capped off a sweeping move with a superb finish.

Portsmouth and Sunderland’s defeats in their respective finales means the Addicks have finished third in the table after 46 games.

They will face Doncaster Rovers away from home in the first leg before hosting the second leg at The Valley.

Lee Bowyer was without Igor Vetokele but was able to welcome back Taylor, alongside Krystian Bielik and Patrick Bauer, for the visit of Rochdale.

Charlton wasted little time in trying to go in front as Aribo twice got into dangerous positions during the opening exchanges.

The hosts were dominant throughout the opening exchanges, imposing themselves on Rochdale, and were soon rewarded for their efforts.

After Taylor couldn’t reign in control of the ball after Aribo’s layoff, Josh Parker played it back into the midfielder whose superb curling effort beat goalkeeper Josh Lillis for his ninth league goal this season.

Rochdale did test home shot stopper Dillon Phillips through Callum Camps but Charlton would eventually double their lead.

A tantalising cross by Taylor looked to have been bundled home by Ben Purrington, only to be ruled a Calvin Andrews own goal.

And then came the third – Albie Morgan’s sublime defence-splitting pass found Taylor to setup a one-on-one which he finished with aplomb.

The second half was much the same, Charlton in firm control as Rochdale having to play catch-up.

Taylor could have assisted his second goal on the afternoon, after teeing up Albie Morgan, but the midfielder’s shot crashed into the side-netting.

One player who found himself unable to get on the scoresheet was Josh Parker, who has still yet to score since joining the club.

With his last league goal coming on Boxing Day last year for Gillingham against Portsmouth, the striker put a glaring chance wide of the target before his flick-on sailed past the post.

But Rochdale, who saw substitute Joseph Bunney go close with a volleyed effort, would concede again following a superb attacking move.

A one-two between Josh Cullen and Krystian Bielik ended up with the latter producing a striker’s finish to beat Lillis for his third Charlton goal this season.

The hosts kept up the pressure all the way towards the end, with Taylor putting a relatively free header over the crossbar and Morgan’s rasping volley being denied by Lillis.
