Two goals in five second half minutes turned the game on its head as Bristol City kept their play-off hopes alive with a 2-1 win over Millwall at The Den.

Lee Gregory brilliantly opened the scoring in the first half before skipper Shaun Williams saw his spot-kick to double the hosts lead saved by Max O’Leary mid-way through the second 45.

The Robins instantly rallied and equalised through a sublime Jamie Paterson free-kick before Famara Diedhiou clinched a vital win for Lee Johnson’s men with ten eight minutes to go.

Early Pressure

Bristol knew only a win would do to keep their play-off hopes alive so it was no surprise they started on the front foot.

It wasn’t until 15 minutes they had their first meaningful effort as Jamie Paterson forced David Martin into a routine stop low-down.

Bristol should’ve been ahead on 39minutes but their top scorer this season Diedhiou couldn’t bundle home from close range.

They were made to pay instantly, and it was Millwall’s top scorer Gregory who beautifully opened the scoring.

Getting on to Steve Morison’s flick-on he controlled and swivelled before volleying home from 12-yards. Delightful.

Second Half

Lee Johnson sent Kasey Palmer on at the break and although they looked more threatening going forward they were vulnerable on the counter.

Jake Cooper struck the post from a corner, whilst Ryan Tunnicliffe forced a good stop from Max O’Leary in the Robins net after a Gregory lay-off.

Eros Pisano had the misfortune of being taken off on the hour despite only entering the fray on 30 minutes as Bristol knew they needed two goals.

The home side should’ve doubled their lead on 73 minutes as Gregory beat an onrushing O’Leary in the box to win a penalty.

The keeper made amends to deny Williams from 12-yards and it seemed to lift the Robins.

Three minutes later they were back on level terms as Paterson’s 25-yard free-kick left Martin rooted to the spot as the visiting support sensed a winner.

And it came through Diedhiou on 82minutes.

A melee in the box and it broke free for the forward to rifle home from the angle and turn the tie on it’s head,a nd with it kept the race for a top six finish alive.

Key Moment Of The Match:

Max O’Leary’s penalty save from Shaun Williams turned the game. Had it gone in Bristol’s play-off hopes would’ve been dashed but it lifted his side instantly as they came back to keep their Premiership dreams alive.

Man Of The Match:

Gregory’s goal alone would’ve been enough to get the nod but his hold up play and defensive shift he puts in from the top is on point every week. Didn’t deserve to be on a losing side, we’ve said that many times this season.
