Romelu Lukaku’s 110th and 111th Premier League goals helped Manchester United to a 2-1 victory over a lethargic Palace side.

Strikes either side of the break gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men the points at Selhurst Park despite a Joel Ward header offering Palace fans hope of a comeback shortly after the hour.

Max Meyer’s introduction on the hour injected pace into a deflated home-side lacking belief before Ashley Young sealed the win with eight minutes remaining.

Missed chances at both ends

Despite their confident start Palace should’ve been behind as early as the seventh minute after captain Luka Milivojevic gave away a cheap corner.

Shaw’s delivery found an on-rushing and unmarked Lukaku six-yards out but the Belgian somehow blazed over.

With a sigh of relief Palace immediately fired a shot back through Andros Townsend who himself blazed over from six-yards after some great work from McArthur down the left.

Solksjaer’s men grew into the half and despite a long-range effort from Townsend, Palace were reliant on the counter attack.

When United’s goal did arrive in the 33rd minute it was largely thanks to left-back Luke Shaw who’s run went unchallenged before dropping it off to Lukaku who nonchalantly stroked it passed a rooted Guaita.

Devils firing after break

With Palace deflated the game coasted to the break where one would assume Hodgson could rally his men, but it was Untied who came out firing.

Pogba sent an early warning shot but he saw his header sail over the bar. The World Cup winner knows he should’ve done better,

The reprieve was not long lived for the Palace defence however as Lukaku fired home after holding off Joel Tomkins after some head tennis in the box.

With Palace looking out of sorts Hodgson turned to Max Meyer off the bench who seemed to inject pace into a tired looking outfit.

The change worked and on 66minutes Ward headed home a teasing Jeffrey Schlupp cross to a huge roar in the Holmesdale end.

As the home-side pressed United found Schlupp, who’d recently reverted to left back for the subbed Patrick van Aanholt was found out of position as Young’s strike on the angle made the points safe.

The result leaves Palace in 14th place, five points above the relegation zone.
