Naby Sarr claims he rarely practices free-kicks despite scoring a sublime effort in Charlton’s 2-1 win at Wimbledon.

Sarr’s strike on 51minutes pulled the Addicks level before they went on to win the game thanks to Igor Vetokele’s last minute winner.

The centre-half is not the designated dead-ball specialist at the club but after his 25-yard strike at Kingsmeadow even manager Lee Bowyer would ‘put his house’ on him taking the next one.

“I only practice sometimes, but now I’ve scored I might practice even more,” said the 25-year-old.

“We have good players who can take free-kicks so I wasn’t needed, but Jacko (Johnnie Jackson) told me on the Friday that if the free-kick is on the right hand side, just have a go, and it went in!”

The Frenchman has been a stand-out performer for Bowyer this season, and the manager has only just stopped short of saying the physical defender is un-droppable.

Despite the glowing praise from his manager, Sarr isn’t taking his starting berth in the side for granted.

“No one is safe, everyone has to fight for his position and that’s what I’m trying to do, and the gaffer has to make the decision.

“I’m confident of what I can do and I’m juts ready to help the team, on and off the pitch.

“I’ve had the chance this season to play more, and the more you play the more you build confidence.

“The last few seasons I wasn’t playing regularly, so this season I have the chance to play most weekends so I’m happy and building on it.”

Charlton’s win consolidates their fifth place position in League One, and it comes after going five games without victory.

The timing of the win was crucial said Sarr, and it can kick-start the final push for promotion.

“I think this win can be the new start for us, if we can begin a series and keep going, because the last 13 games are very important for us so this win has come at the right time.”

Sarr, who saw red in the return fixture at The Valley, toed the line to a dismissal against Wimbledon, with one challenge on Scott Wagstaff that some people deemed a red.

“Yeah I was a bit worried, but that’s a tackle.

“Sometimes you touch the ball and sometimes the leg, so I didn’t know what he decision he was going to take, he pulled a yellow, and it was the correct decision of course.”

Charlton travel to Doncaster who sit just one place below them in sixth next Saturday.
