Roy Hodgson today becomes the oldest manager in Premier League history as his Crystal Palace side take on Leicester City.

Despite the record, Hodgson won’t be celebrating, instead more focused on the job in hand insisting his age is irrelevant.

“My age never comes in to my mind,” said the 71-year-old.

“I made a conscious decision to stop (thinking I’m older) at 60, and all the time I feel ok I’ll stay at 60 and it doesn’t matter what it says on my birth certificate.

“Age is just a number.”

In taking charge Hodgson surpasses Sir bobby’s Robson record, a feat that is not lost on the Palace manager.

“I’m pleased to bracketed in the same group or the same breath as Bobby Robson.

“He was an excellent manager, person and a good friend.”

Despite the obvious pride Hodgson has in being mentioned alongside ‘Sir Bobby,’ the record itself is not something the Croydon born boss has thought about.

“I’ve been obliged to think about it recently because people have asked about it, but my views about age haven’t changed, you’re as old as you feel.

“I suppose it’s a milestone, a historical mark, which I guess I can be pleased about.

“But I don’t pay much attention to it.

“Achievements are there for you to you look back on, and when you’re fighting hard for points, there’s not much time to look back and reflect on the journey you’re on.

“If you believe in your profession and love the game as most of us managers do, having the ability to thrive and having things on your CV to proud of is something you can be happy about achieving.”

Hodgson’s side who are 13th in the table travel to the King Power Stadium to face an under-pressure Claude Puel side that are a place above them.
