With as many as twelve players out of contract in the summer, Charlton’s Head of Recruitment Steve Gallen moved to ease fans’ worries of a mass exodus ahead of the impending departure of Karlan Grant.

Jake Forster-Caskey, Jonny Williams, Igor Vetokele, Patrick Bauer, Chris Solly, Billy Clarke, Ben Reeves, Mark Marshall, Tariq Fosu, Joe Aribo, George Lapslie and Grant are all free to leave in six months unless anything changes.

Speaking to Love Sport Radio, Gallen addressed fans of where he feels the club are with regards to tying key personnel to the club beyond their current deals.

“I’m confident Joe Aribo signs a new contract,” said Gallen. ‎

‎"I’ve sat down with his agent a few times and been texting. We haven’t had a focus on it the last few weeks because of all the other things going on in the window."‎

‎"There have been discussions with George’s agent and I don’t think that’s far away."‎

It is understandably assumed that many new deals depend on which division the Addicks find themselves in next season, with Lee Bowyer targeting automatic promotion.

One deal that Gallen mentioned was that of tying down goal keeper ‎Dillon Phillips, who has regained his number one jersey after Jed Steer’s Aston Villa recall and despite the arrival of Chris Maxwell on loan from Preston.

“I think we’re very close to having a deal.‎ It is something being discussed with his agent.‎”

‎There was less optimism for the long-term future of Nicky Ajose and Karlan Grant however.

Ajose, who’s been loaned out to Mansfield in League Two looks to have played his last game for the club.

‎ "We as a club, get a few quid if they (Mansfield) get promoted. ‎

"If we bring in one, or hopefully two, this week then hopefully they will be more suited to Lee."‎

'Very, very keen'

Karlan Grant’s move to Huddersfield is looking increasingly likely, but Gallen insisted it was not unforeseen as preparations have been underway to find a potential replacement for the 14-goal ace.

"Huddersfield are very, very keen on Karlan.

"But we're very keen on him too. We have not wanted him to go from the first minute. That'll be the case until the last minute.

"That will be right up until the end of his contract, whether that is this week or in the summer.

“If Karlan does leave, we'll look to sign a player that can run in behind, has a bit of pace, someone with a good attitude, and can score goals for us.

“We have to prepare for all these eventualities, and I’ve had this on my mind for a little while.”
