Every game is a cup final from now on according to Charlton Athletic midfielder Josh Cullen.

The Addicks remain in the hunt for automatic promotion following their feisty 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley on Saturday but Cullen said they can't take their foot off the gas.

“We can’t slip up,” said 22-year-old Cullen.

“Every game is a big game, we look at Peterborough and Luton or no disrespect a team like Stanley or lower down the table, whoever we are playing now we’ve got to treat it as a cup final.

“We’ve ground to make up and we need to make sure we win as many games from now until the end of the season as we can.”

The West Ham United loanee was making his return from a dislocated shoulder in the feisty 1-0 win where Karlan Grant’s controversial penalty deep in injury gave the Addicks the crucial three points after having Lyle Taylor sent off.

Lee Bowyer confirmed they will appeal Taylor's sending off and Cullen said the possibility of losing the striker for three matches would be a huge blow to their promotion bid.

“Lyle said he shouldn’t get sent off, so if he hasn’t done anything wrong the people who will have to look at it they may be able to rescind it.

“Fingers crossed for us because obviously he’s a big player for us.”

Regarding the penalty where Ben Reeves’ cross was adjudged to have hit a Stanley hand, Cullen said:

“I’ve not seen it back but on the run of play, especially second half, we definitely deserved the win.

“Karlan was the coolest man in the house at the time, he took himself out of the situation, he did fantastic to hold his nerve and score the pen.”

The importance of the win was not lost on Cullen and he explained how the fighting spirit shown shows that they’re ready to battle for one of the top two spots.

“We’ve shown a few occasions we’ll go until the death, and we showed that again.

“Days like this when you nick a one-nil, you battle and fight, you look back on at the end of the season and think ‘that was a day where we won a crucial three points.’

“Portsmouth and Luton have got to come here, but we need to keep doing our business and hopefully they slip up and we can be there or there about at the end of the season.”
