Julián Speroni has explained what happened from his perspective when Liverpool scored their third in a 4-3 thriller against Crystal Palace.

The third-string goalkeeper was forced to react quickly when James Milner hooked the ball back into the danger zone when it looked set to go out of play.

But when Speroni got a hand to it the ball spun out of his reach before Mohamed Salah poked the ball in from close range, handing Liverpool the lead again.

Andros Townsend’s goal after the half hour mark gifted Palace a shock lead heading into the break, however, Salah and Roberto Firmino scored twice in five minutes to erase their advantage.

After James Tomkins levelled the scores Salah hit Liverpool’s third, and Sadio Mané made it 4-2, before substitute Max Meyer pegged one back for a dramatic finish.

Speroni, who made his first start since December 2017, said: “I thought I had people behind me so I didn’t want to tap it in. I got a hand on it, I tried to deflect it, but it somehow spun backwards rather than going forwards.

“It happened so quick, I don’t remember exactly how [it happened] but it’s one of those things.

“I’m disappointed with the result. I think we stuck to our game plan, and it was working, they found two goals early in the second half and that put us on the back foot.

“But then we reacted well. The third goal was crazy – I got a hand on it but it somehow spun the wrong way round – and then we just kept going.

“The fourth goal, I think, killed the game. We managed to get one in the end [through Meyer] but it was too late.”
