Charlton’s Jonny Williams revealed the reason he made the move from Crystal Palace this January was down to Lee Bowyer.

Making his first competitive start since the end of August in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland, the midfielder said the influence of the manager was a key factor in joining The Addicks.

“He was massive,” said Williams.

“I met up with him before I came, we had a chat and everything he was saying I was on board with straight away.

“I need to play as much as I can, stay fit, keep my head down and make an impact.

“I’ve spoken to the manager and he’s keen to improve my game because at the end of the day it’s down to confidence with me, and I’m excited by that.”

Williams came on with 20 minutes to go at The Valley and revealed that playing regularly, and starting, was a major reason in signing the six-month contract and that extending the deal was not out of the question.

“It got to a point and I made my mind up I needed to move on for the good of my career.

“It’s been an emotional couple of days with all the messages from fans and friends I’ve made over the last 17 years at Palace but I needed the change.

“I’m looking forward to playing as many games as I can in a Charlton shirt until the end of the season and if enjoy my time here, do well for the club, get enough games, I don’t see why not.

“I’ve ruled nothing out.”

Williams won promotion to the Premiership with Palace in 2013, said that he saw the similarities with his new side and that the Championship should be the target this season.

“We’ve got to look at every game as a potential win.

“It’s a great feeling, (Promotion), playing week to week you go in to every game thinking you can win.

“We’re one of the best teams in the league and if we play like we did second half I don’t see why we shouldn’t.

“We look strong all over the pitch.”

One-person Williams move to East London pleased was one of his closest friends, who he says foresaw the switch.

“My mate from school is a Charlton fan, he’s buzzing.

“He predicted it months ago as he knew I may be up for transfer

“I’ll have to get his kid a little Williams shirt.”
