Karlan Grant and Lyle Taylor hit twice in a matter of minutes as Charlton defeated Walsall to earn their first win of 2019 at the Valley.

Tariqe Fosu fed through Grant before the striker slotted home for his 12th league goal this season after just six minutes.

And then Taylor would get in on the act when he converted from 12 yards out after he was brought down in the box.

Despite Andy Cook halving the deficit a couple minutes into the restart, the Addicks held on for all three points.

Here’s how we rated Charlton’s players…

Dillon Phillips – 6 – Had barely anything to do in most of the first halvf, but made a few very good saves. Cook finished quite well to beat him.

Anfernee Dijksteel – 5 – Not his best game. Morgan Ferrier was a handful for him, and that problem appeared to seep into other areas of his performance.

Patrick Bauer – 7 – Took the captain’s armband for the game in place of the injured Jason Pearce. Didn’t look too troubled or make any glaring mistakes.

Naby Sarr – 7 – His first appearance back since completing a three-match suspension. Appeared comfortable at the heart of Charlton’s defence with Bauer.

Toby Stevenson – 6 – A decent showing given the circumstances, although Walsall got the better of him in behind as the game moved into the closing stages. Crossing was a bit sketchy.

Krystian Bielik – 6 – Was a bit over-eager with the ball as Charlton struggled to break Walsall down in open play, though he made a brilliant block late on. Made some good tackles, too.

Albie Morgan – 6 – His energy up and down the field was a big boost. In the moments leading up to the Taylor penalty he made a good run before whipping the ball into the box. Solid.

Tariqe Fosu – 6 – Laid on the assist for Grant’s goal and could’ve had a second before the striker was denied close in. Faded a bit in the second half. Replaced by Marshall.

Ben Reeves – 6 – He didn’t quite look to be at the races. Passing wasn’t as sharp and set-piece deliveries a bit inconsistent. A little too fatigued, perhaps?

Lyle Taylor – 7 – Soundly converted the penalty nine minutes in for the second goal. Got entangled in a lot of battles with the Walsall back four and had limited chances following the goal.

Karlan Grant – 7 – Great finish for the opening goal. Faultless work rate, like Taylor, and eventually came in to help Stevenson late on.
