With the half way point of the season approaching and the January transfer window soon to open, we have a look at whether Lee Bowyer’s last voyage in to the loan market was a hit or miss.

Bowyer brought in four players on loan in the summer, goalkeeper Jed Steer, defender Krystian Bielik, and midfielders Josh Cullen and Jamie Ward.

It’s fair to say that each recruit has contributed to Charlton’s current league position, but what do the fans think?

Josh Cullen

Cullen came to The Valley from West Ham with arguably the most promise. The 22-year-old arrived with the hope that he’d fill the creative midfield void left by the injured Jake Forster-Caskey. It wasn’t long before the fans knew they had a player on their hands after he was thrown in to the starting XI immediately after signing.

“He’s better than I was at that age,” said Bowyer of the midfielder.

Currently injured with a dislocated shoulder, Bowyer and fans alike will be counting down the days until he returns to the fold to push the club towards promotion this season.

Fans View:

“Another level.” Tom Moon

“Everyone talking about (Lyle) Taylor or (Karlan) Grant for stand out performer so far but he's definitely in the mix for that because for me he’s been absolutely outstanding. I love watching him play, great passing , calm on the ball , calm under pressure , makes us tick and is a joy to watch absolutely loving Cullen.” Harry Hough

“Cullen is an excellent player and should be playing at a higher level, hopefully with us fingers crossed.” 100% Charlton

“Unreal on the ball.” Nicky Windham

“It was such a shame he got injured, such a key player and I'd be delighted when he's match fit.” Tom Spencer

Krystian Bielik

Bielik has had rave reviews in recent weeks from manager and fans alike. The versatile Arsenal-loanee has figured across the backline and shielding in front of the defence in a midfield role.

Bowyer said of the 20-year-old’s recent performance:

“Playing centre-half I think is too easy for him. I think he reads the game very well, he's very, very comfortable in possession, but he gives so much more playing in front of the back four because of his physicality and protection.”

Fans View:

“Bielik is showing the same promise Francis Coquelin showed whilst with us, although I think Bielik’s head is screwed on a bit more though.” Tom Moon

“He can play in the Premier League if he continues to develop.” Nicky Windham

“Very decent.” Daniel Hatton

“He’s been outstanding calm on the ball, great passing , good defending he's been one of our stand out performers for me so hopefully that continues.” Harry Hough

Jamie Ward

Ward arrived on an initial six-month loan deal from Nottingham Forest and has impressed in Lee Bowyer’s side with his experience and attacking play. It’s fair to say that with injuries the Charlton have not seen the Irishman have a run in the side to showcase his undoubted ability. Fans are untied in their opinion that he has quality but want to see more goals from the much-travelled winger.

Fans View:

“Been quite hit and miss had his poor games and also had his good games just need to score more goals and get more assists hopefully comes good soon.” Harry Hough

“Ward has done well although we need more goals from him.” Nicky Windham

“Has done a decent job but easier to replace (than others) if we had to.” Chris Warnes

Jed Steer

Steer arrived on a season long loan from Aston Villa with huge potential, son much so that fans of the midlands club weren’t too keen to send their shot-stopper out on his fourth loan. The 26-year-old usurped Dillon Phillips to establish himself as Charlton’s number one in early September and has been an ever-present since.

All fans are in agreement that it took the keeper a little time to settle but Bowyer made a shrewd signing.

Fans View:

“He started off slowly but has proven how good he is lately.” Nicky Windham

“Very impressed with how he’s grown in to the season.” 100% Charlton

“I hope we keep Steer as we desperately need a keeper other than Phillips.” Tom Spencer
