Mark Marshall’s goal in Charlton’s 2-0 win over AFC Wimbledon is just the start according to the winger.

Game time has been at a premium for the Jamaican this season but he insists he’s relishing the challenge of fighting for a spot in Lee Bowyer’s starting XI.

Krystian Bielik fed Marshall through in the 86th minute who buried it in the bottom right-corner for his first league goal since January this year.

“I’m not going to rest on this,” a jubilant Marshall said.

“Me getting back in to the team is not down to me sitting down and whining, I’m out there practicing constantly every day. It doesn’t end because I scored a goal. I’ve got to keep going.

“I want more goals, more assists, and I want to help my team mates by putting in good performances.”

Marshall’s desire to force his way into Bowyer’s plans was shown in the effort just to make Saturday’s matchday squad. Having picked up a heavy blow in Tuesday’s win at Portsmouth, Marshall was a doubt to feature.

“I thought I got hit by a bus when he hit me, I was winded, my hip wasn’t working properly, groin was hurting. I couldn’t run, but I want to be out there, because for me every opportunity is an opportunity.

“I could’ve easily sat out but I wouldn’t have scored a goal today.”

For his goal, Marshall heaped praise on Bowyer and said that he’s still improving at 31 years of age because of the manager.

“When the ball was coming to me, I was thinking of checking back on my left foot. But he’s (Bowyer) been telling me in training, let it run across you and hit it across the goal.

“It’s about taking the information on board and executing to the best of my ability.

“You’re never too old to learn. He (Bowyer) played at the top for 16, 17 years so he’s a good person to take information from.”

Marshall has started just three league games this campaign and despite admitting to being frustrated on the sidelines, it won’t hinder his efforts towards the team’s cause.

“I love what I do so if I can look myself in the mirror and say ‘you didn’t give your best’ I’ll be disappointed with myself. So every time I play football, I go on that pitch and I want to be one of the best players there, I want to earn my money.

“I’ve got to just bide my time, keep working hard and today luckily I got my reward. I’m a firm believer that if you work hard something positive will happen.”

With fellow attackers Karlan Grant and Lyle Taylor both carrying injuries, the busy Christmas schedule may provide Marshall with the opportunities he’s been hoping for.

“At times its difficult, but it’s a new challenge - trying to get my way back in to the team. I’m a pro at the end of the day, I work hard, I’m disciplined, respect the manager and try to better myself.

“It’s about bettering yourself.”
