Day 13 of your Charlton Christmas Calendar let's us look at a star of the future.

Charlton don’t have a number 13 in their squad, which is quite ironic considering how unlucky they’ve been with injuries this season.

With the treatment room at full capacity, one person who has benefited from the crisis is youngster Toby Stevenson.

The 18-year-old defender came in to the fore after injuries to Lewis Page and later Chris Solly gave him his chance in the first team set-up.

Boy, did he take his opportunity. Making his debut in the 8-0 Checkatrade Trophy win at Stevenage in October, he contributed a hat-trick to Charlton’s record win. All the more surprising was his admission that getting on the score-sheet is new to him.

“I don’t really score that much, to be fair,” he said following the game.

“It was a great experience for me. I’m really grateful to the gaffer for putting me in and to Jason [Euell] for recommending me to him. It was brilliant.”

His goals-scoring habit continued in his next game and he has been on the fringes of Bowyer’s squad since.

The man they bought from Leyton Orient in the summer got his first league start in the 2-1 defeat at Blackpool in early December. He since dropped to the bench but can now think of himself as a bona-fide first team squad member and with his attitude towards improvement Lee Bowyer may not need to search the January transfer market for a back-up left back to the soon-to-be returning Lewis Page.

“It’s a great club, I had a chance to come here and I wanted to sign, it’s a great club, all the people here, all the boys are lovely lads. It’s a good club to be at.

“I’ve just to keep working hard, keep doing what I’m doing, keep performing well and try my best every time.”
