The German arrived in the summer from Schalke under the radar despite being one of the hottest properties just 12-months prior.

Having been frozen out in Germany, Roy Hodgson and Steve Parish looked to have pulled of a huge coup in bringing the midfielder to Selhurst Park.

It was clear that it would take the diminutive Meyer some time to get up to full speed in the Premier League but few would’ve predicted it would take him almost half a season.

The 23-year-old has undoubted quality but often went missing in matches, maybe the physicality or speed of the top flight was too intense for the man standing at 5’6”?

Often played wide on the right by Hodgson, some felt he was wasted on the flank, but more recently he has shown glimpses of the player the Eagles hoped they were getting.

A fine display at Old Trafford garnered praise from Hodgson, but it was his performance against Burnley that set tails wagging in South London.

In an inspired showing he led the Eagles to a 2-0 victory and found himself unlucky not to get on the scoresheet too.

It’ll be intriguing to see how he is deployed when Christian Benteke returns to action.

With Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend both seemingly un-droppable, and the side crying out for a centre-forward, it could see Meyer pushed to his favoured number 10 role, meaning one of James McArthur, Luka Milivojevic or Cheikhou Kouyate may need to be sacrificed.

He hasn’t set the league alight yet, but there are signs that he could be a top player.
