Roy Hodgson stopped short of saying he is desperate for January reinforcements following the 3-1 defeat at Brighton on Tuesday night.

Despite being a man light following Shane Duffy’s dismissal, Hodgson implied he had no solutions on his bench to unlock the Albion defence.

“If I had players on the bench I would’ve done it, but everyone knows we don’t have that player,” said Hodgson when asked if he should’ve made changes at half time.

“If I thought I could make a change that would’ve put us in an undoubted position that would’ve won us the game, I would’ve done it."

Jeffrey Schlupp and Alexander Sorloth were introduced in the second half but Hodgson continued:

“I don’t think the changes we made, made a large difference at all if I’m honest.”

Glen Murray, Leon Balogun and a Florin Andone’s solo effort sealed the tie for Chris Hughton’s side before the half with a Luka Milivojevic penalty nothing more than a consolation for the visitors.

Time Running Out for Sorloth and Ayew

With one goal in 16 appearances the Norwegian’s time at Palace seems to be running out. It seems Hodgson’s patience with the striker is wearing thin and that the former England manager is counting down the days until Christian Benteke and Connor Wickham are ready for selection.

Jordan Ayew remained an unused substitute at The Amex and with no goals to his name in 11 games, he’s offered Hodgson no incentive to play the Ghanaian. With Hodgson’s post-match comments implying he’s looking for ‘that player’ who can change a game, Ayew’s future at Selhurst Park seems to mirror to Sorloth’s.

Despite Palace’s failings in front of goal this season, Hodgson was equally as scornful with his side’s defending on the south-coast.

Balogun’s strike, moments after his introduction, came from a corner which Palace failed to clear. Brighton’s third came from Andone’s superb solo run in a breakaway attack where James Tomkins and Mamadou Sakho will know they should’ve done better.

“The second and third goals are disappointing and frustrating.

“It seems to be fairly obvious when you come here to win a game and lose 3-1, there are no good things I feel.

“The second goal was something we have to take total responsibility for and the third one too, that wasn’t even an attack it was just a clearance.

“There is nothing positive I can say at all.”
