Lee Bowyer said he saw a different side to his team in their ‘ugly win’ over Bristol Rovers.

Goals from Jamie Ward, Joe Aribo and a 90th minute strike from Karlan Grant was enough to secure the points despite Joe Martin’s superb strike levelling the tie briefly.

“In the past we probably wouldn’t have won that game,” said the Charlton boss.

“Maybe I’m drumming it in to them, we can’t lose these games.

“When we went to Rochdale, Scunthorpe and didn’t win I let them know it’s not right or acceptable. Now they know.

“I’ll keep pushing them. That’s my job. To realise you have to do the horrible side of the game as well, like today. We rely on players putting bodies on the line and blocking shots, and they did that.”

Good for the win

Bowyer felt his side deserved the victory despite not hitting top form.

Without the club’s top scorer Lyle Taylor through suspension, Bowyer started with Nicky Ajose, Karlan Grant and Jamie Ward as his attacking threats.

He believed they were good for the win and felt the game should’ve been out of sight by half-time.

“We deserved to win. The first half hour I didn’t think they could get to grips with us.

“We moved the ball well, scored, missed two sitters. Nicky (Ajose) and George (Lapslie) both should’ve scored, seven yards out, you have to score.

“Second half it was more like a battle.

“The most important thing is we’ve won ugly.”

Charlton remain sixth in the league level on points with Blackpool a place below but ahead on goal difference. The Addicks visit Burton on Tuesday.
