Lee Bowyer isn’t getting carried away after his side’s 5-0 FA Cup first-round replay win over Mansfield Town on Tuesday.

A Lyle Taylor hat-trick and strikes from Mark Marshall and Nicky Ajose gave the Addicks a convincing win on paper, but the Charlton boss said the scoreline flattered his side.

“It wasn’t a 5-0 result for me,” said Bowyer.

“I’m happy. But don’t get too ahead of yourself because it wasn’t that result. They’ve missed three or four goals, they missed chances. We were lucky to get a clean sheet.

“I think their manager should be proud of their side and I think they did well tonight. I said they were a good team, and they are.”

The visitors will feel hard done by after a number of decisions went against them.

A strong first half penalty appeal from Danny Rose was waved away despite clearly being manhandled by Naby Sarr in the box, as well as an offside call which ruled out CJ Hamilton’s fine strike.

The turning point however was the in the build up to the third goal, scored by Marshall.

At 2-0 down, the Stags were pushing for a breakthrough and looked to have been awarded a freekick on the half way by referee Kevin Johnson. The referee incorrectly pointed in favour of the visitors and as they sent their defensive pairing up to attack, Charlton took a quick free-kick and scored as Mansfield’s back-line were deep in the Charlton’s half. Needless to say they made their feelings known to the referee immediately after.

“I feel for them,” continued Bowyer.

“I think the right thing to do would’ve been to stop the free-kick until they’re back in position and stop us taking the quick one. But it didn’t so I do feel for them. It’s harsh 100%.”

Bowyer rested a number of first team regulars and gave those coming back from injury or those in need of first team game experience a chance.

Patrick Bauer made his first appearance since early September and Billy Clarke continued his comeback playing 70-minutes in central midfield.

“The league is my priority and I won’t take my eye off that I can assure you. But I’ve got good lads and they come in and give me 100%.

“We had kids out there at the end. It’s good for the club, it shows the players we’re bringing through the academy.”
