A Lee Gregory brace and a Ryan Leonard lob meant that Millwall came away as victors in their encounter with bottom placed Ipswich Town.

Gregory’s goals were his 6th and 7th of the season while Ryan Leonard opened his scoring account for the Lions in the second half with an audacious lob from 25 yards.

Ipswich were in the better side in the opening minutes but lacked composure in the final third as no other visiting player could match Kayden Jackson’s intensity.

Millwall grew into the first half after being sloppy in possession in the opening minutes but unlike Wigan in midweek, the Lions took their chances.

A Shaun William’s corner floated into the box on 26 minutes and after a flurry of deflections the ball fell to the feet of Lee Gregory who smashed it home.

Millwall again looked dangerous from set pieces after Jiri Skalak’s free kick found Murray Wallace who knocked it back across goal and Jake Cooper was only inches away from tapping it in at the back post.

Millwall raced out of the traps in the second half and pushed Ipswich back. Their efforts were rewarded when Ryan Leonard propelled a long throw in to the box. Cooper flicked it on and Gregory again, got in front of his man and flicked it past Bialkowski in the Ipswich goal.

Ipswich to fight back but their lack of creativity meant that the Lions could easily quell any endeavour before it gained any momentum.

The Lions roared on to find a third and it came in the 70th minute. Ipswich keeper, Bartosz Bialkowski punched out a Shane Ferguson cross which fortunately fell to the feet of Ryan Leonard. The ex-Sheffield United man then gracefully chipped home from 25-yards.

Ipswich nearly gained a consolation goal when Trevoh Chabolah’s looping effort from long range smacked the outside of the post. The Lions held on however to secure their first clean sheet in 13 games.

The win means Millwall are now 4 points of the drop zone in 18th ahead of their match against Brentford next week.
