Former Charlton boss Karl Robinson believes the fans are in "unbelievable hands" with Lee Bowyer and Johnnie Jackson following his return to the Valley.

He came back with his new club Oxford United as Lyle Taylor converted from the penalty spot to grab his eighth goal this season shortly before the half hour mark.

But U’s substitute Gavin Whyte struck a top-corner finish out of Jed Steer’s reach, leaving the Addicks with just a point from the scrappy affair.

Robinson, who quit Charlton for his current job, has been impressed with Bowyer since his former assistant manager took over the permanent role.

He said: “I said before outside that Bow [Bowyer] has done unbelievable here. He’s done incredible.

“Charlton needs a Charlton man.

“Having him and Jacko [Johnnie Jackson] in that dugout tonight, I bet the fans are so proud of the support from the people that are trying to get this club back to where it dearly belongs.

“But the recruitment team here in the last four transfer windows has got rid of an awful lot. I think it’s a much better club than what it was two years ago, and I think a lot of people – Bow included – deserve an awful lot of applause for that.”

This is Bowyer’s first gig as manager since retiring as a player in 2012 after an 18-year professional career which first started at Charlton.

He was appointed as Robinson’s second-in-command last July before the 38-year-old departed this March, allowing Bowyer to take the reigns.

Asked why he thinks Charlton needs a “Charlton man”, Robinson added: “Because the people here are so passionate about their own club. This football club is all about the people, the community.

“It has such strong roots with the community and that really shocked me when I came in. Being from Liverpool, it’s hard to dissociate yourself and say you knew everything about the place – because I didn’t.

“But these people do. This club, and the community, and what it does within the local area, they fight for each other. They love young players coming through the system, they rely upon that.

“You’ve seen it tonight with Joe Aribo and Karlan Grant. They’re such a talent. Anfernee Dijksteel, Sols [Chris Solly]. It’s part of the DNA here and I think it’s always important that they have that.

“You know more than anybody that the turbulent time they had was when they went outside of – not only Charlton but outside of England.

“Just to have somebody like him [Bowyer] here I think is important, some clubs really need.

“I think if you’re a fan of Charlton Athletic you’re in unbelievable hands in Bow and Jacko.”
