Tuesday’s 5-3 defeat at Scunthorpe was a mixed bag of the good and the bad according to Addicks manager Lee Bowyer.

He was impressed by his side’s offence but equally disappointed with his side’s defence.

Goals from Lyle Taylor and a Joe Aribo brace was not enough as a controversial penalty and an injury time goal gave the Lincolnshire outfit the points.

“I’m seeing good things but horrendous things too,” Bowyer told the clubs website.

“It was the craziest, most frustrating, disappointing game I’ve been involved in as a manager so far.”

Despite the defeat Bowyer is not getting carried away as he reflects on their recent run of form which saw a four-game winning streak and no defeat in seven league games, which also gave the Charlton head honcho a manager of the month nomination for September.

“It’s difficult, I can’t go too mad at the lads because we had been good. Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture.”

He was however disappointed in how his side conceded the goals on Tuesday and at the weekend in the 2-2 draw at Luton.

“We scored three away from home and scored two on Saturday. You can’t do that and only come away with one point. We’re doing good things in the final third but we just need to stop doing these silly mistakes.”

Bowyer was unmoved when asked his opinion on the penalty decision that ultimately cost Charlton on Tuesday. A handball from close range seemed harsh and Bowyer’s reluctance to discuss the decision was telling.

“I’m not going to speak to the referee. It’s clear to see, so everyone can make their own minds up. I’ve already been in trouble for not saying much this season. Everyone who has seen the game can make their minds up. It’s frustrating, but I can’t control his decision.”

The result leaves Charlton in eighth place in the Championship and they welcome 14th placed Coventry before the two-week international break.
