The scoreline was deserved and Fulham really did outclass Neil Harris’s men on Tuesday night, but there were signs Millwall were becoming more ‘Millwall-like’ as their manager demanded after their last few performances.

This was epitomised by Lee Gregory.

Paired up front with Tom Elliot in a big man-little man combination, Gregory seemed to fill both roles.

Feeding on scraps the 30-year-old chased lost causes, came deep to pick the ball up, challenged (and won) many aerial battles, and brought players in to the game. Sadly for Gregory his team were second best all over the park to a very good Fulham side in the first half to cause any real damage.

Latching on to a long ball over the top he had ‘Ream on toast’ with his pace, but he will be disappointed with the tame effort directly at the man between the sticks at the end of it. This was Millwall’s only real shot on target in the opening 45.

As Harris changed the system second half it seemed to bring more out of Elliot and it allowed Gregory to have more of a free-role, making runs across the channels which were for a period looked to have given Millwall some momentum.

The Cyrus Christie strike put an end to the tie but the result was irrelevant. The manager and fans wanted to see commitment, passion and hunger in their side and Gregory certainly provided.

Gregory has played a part in each game this season, scoring twice, but was dropped for the West Brom game at the weekend. Harris openly admitted he used the Fulham game as an opportunity for players on the periphery to stake a claim for a starting berth and Gregory certainly made his case heard to be recalled.
