Four goals, a penalty shootout and a proposal.

That’s the magic of the Checkatrade Trophy.

With the scores tied at one all and Lee Bowyer’s boys tucking in to their half time oranges, the half time entertainment arrived as usual.

But, instead of the ‘blindfolded penalty shootout,’ the crowd witnessed one loved up fan bend down on one knee and propose.

She said yes.

Jamie Whitehead who witnessed the scenes with friends said: “We completely fell for it, we thought it had replaced the Crossbar Challenge. I even accused them of cheating when she took the blindfold off him before he took his kick.

“It’s nice, though. Well done to the club for doing it. Nice to see people smiling there for once... good luck to the happy couple.”

Unfortunately, that’s where the good news stopped as the visitors won the game on penalties after the game finished two all after ninety minutes.

The visitors took the lead twice thanks to goals from Anthony Hartigan and Tom Soares but were pulled back by Mouhamadou-Naby Sarr and Jamie Mascoll strikes, forcing the shootout.

James Hanson scored the vital goal for the visitors in the shootout giving them the extra point and putting them second in Group G behind Stevenage, Charlton’s next opponents in the competition.

This weekend sees Charlton return to league action currently sat in 10th, welcoming 16th placed Wycombe.
