David Nugent’s second-half strike nearly made Millwall throw away a two-goal lead for the second time as they held on against Derby County.

Shaun Williams’ cross from an indirect free-kick bobbled off Jake Cooper in as the Lions took the lead after just six minutes.

And it became two when the midfielder’s effort from long-range deflected off Fikayo Tomori and into the top-right corner of the net.

Despite substitute Nugent getting a goal to halve Millwall’s lead, the hosts held on just enough to get their first win in the Championship this season.

Here is how News Shopper rated Millwall’s players…

Jordan Archer – 6 – Tested a couple times and was in for a fairly quiet afternoon up until Nugent scored.

Mahlon Romeo – 6 – With the help of Wallace, he subdued Tom Lawrence for large periods of the first-half. Second became tougher and struggled a bit.

Shaun Hutchinson – 6 – Was caught out once or twice during the second-half but was otherwise fine. Appeared shaken-up after getting taken out by David Nugent.

Jake Cooper – 7 – Looked to have scored the first goal, though some say it was scored by Lee Gregory. Made a key interception in the second half. Performed well against Martyn Waghorn.

James Meredith – 8 – A solid performance. Derby didn’t get as much enjoyment down his wing as they did down Romeo’s, and soon enough they changed tact.

Jed Wallace – 7 – Helped quell Tom Lawrence down Millwall’s right, however, he was a little late on some occasions. Won a fair few fouls but was quiet in attack.

Shaun Williams – 8 – Got lucky with his goal as it deflected off Fikayo Tomori but still a great effort. Made big contributions defensively, especially when tasked with Mason Mount.

George Saville – 6 – Got forward and had a few efforts on goal though few, if any, were on target. Missed a golden opportunity late to extend Millwall’s lead.

Aiden O’Brien – 6 – Had more defensive responsibilities than attacking and performed them capably.

Steve Morison – 6 – Hold-up play was not as strong as it could have been and looked a little tired towards the last 10 minutes. Maybe could have come off sooner.

Lee Gregory – 9 – Got a touch for the first goal, though some dispute it was his. Could have had a clear goal if not for miscommunication issues. Worked tremendously hard. Man of the match.
