Three unanswered goals from National League South newcomers Billericay Town were more than enough to see off Welling United.

Although Welling started brightly, they were unable to score the opener and paid the price.

Jack Jebb had an early opportunity with a free kick following a foul on John Paul Kissock, but Louis Wells made an excellent save at the bottom corner.

Clever work from Jake Robinson created space out wide but his drilled low cross was well held by Dan Wilks.

Another chance came Jebb’s way when Brendan Kiernan was tumbled unceremoniously. This time Jebb’s free kick beat Wells all ends up but it came back off the post. Danny Mills threw himself at the rebound but was unable to find the target with his header.

Wells was again asked a question when tipping over from a Kiernan shot at the end of a free flowing Welling move.

Richard Orlu met Jebb’s excellent corner but couldn’t get enough on it to direct his header inside the post.

Sam Deering shanked a half volley wide at the other end before his tumble in the box failed to impress the referee.

However there was no dispute when he was pulled back in the eighteen yard box soon after and a penalty was awarded. Former Wings’ favourite Adam Coombes sent Wilks the wrong way from the spot.

Jordan Gibbons sent over a deep cross but the angle was too tight for Bradley Goldberg whose header went into the side netting.

Danny Waldren, another one time Welling player, tried his luck from deep but Wilks made an easy save.

Wells then made a superb save from Goldberg when tipping onto the bar unaware that the offside flag had already been raised and just before half-time another cross by Gibbons found Mills but he was off balance and headed wide.

After the interval Kiernan went on a long run but his low driven cross couldn’t pick out a team-mate then Mills headed over from a Jebb cross.

Against the run of play, Billericay increased their lead when Deering’s free kick was met by Simon Walton and he headed home unchallenged.

Two became three eight minutes later when a hopeful punt by Joseph Kizzi split the defence and Robinson prodded home for his fifth goal of the season.

That took the stuffing out of Welling and Robinson might have scored again when he got in behind but the angle was against him and his shot went behind.

Substitutes Nassim L’Ghoul and Gavin McCallum tried to lift Welling and the former had a shot that took a deflection and ballooned up for Wells to claim.

Thierry Audel headed over from Jebb’s corner then a Mills header drew an easy save from Wells.

To their credit, Welling didn’t give up the ghost and a little bit of trickery from L’Ghoul gave McCallum the opportunity to let fly but his shot flew well wide to sum up Welling’s night.
