Lee Bowyer is set to make decisions on three trialists in the coming weeks as Charlton Athletic prepare for their opening day clash with Sunderland.

Elliot Ward, Rohan Ince, and Simon Dawkins all featured during a 1-1 pre-season friendly draw with Brighton and Hove Albion at the Valley.

But their futures will be decided quickly as the Addicks look to finalise their squad numbers before the transfer window shuts.

Bowyer said: “I think for Dawkins, he’s been with us for a while now so we really need to make a decision regarding him before the Sunderland game for sure. Either way.

“It’s a difficult situation regarding Ward, we’ve spoken to him about it but I think he was outstanding tonight. He’s experienced, he’s always in the right place.

“Does he have the pace anymore that he probably did have 10 years ago? No.

“But he seems to put himself in the right areas and he’s very good in possession.”

For Ward, this would be the 33-year-old defender's ninth different club – including loan spells – since leaving League One new boys Coventry City in 2010.

Meanwhile, former Tottenham Hotspur academy youngster Simon Dawkins is back in English football after featuring for MLS club the San Jose Earthquakes.

And Rohan Ince managed 45 minutes for Charlton against his now former side in Brighton following time on loan with Bury.

Bowyer added: “It’s difficult for him [Ince] because he’s only been in a week, he hasn’t kicked a ball before he came in with us all summer.

“He looked a bit off of it for me in this game, fitness-wise I mean, compared to our lads. But in possession he looks good.

“Ince will be with us for another couple of weeks, I’d say, and then it’d be fairer to make a decision then.”
